Why I serve in our community

Some of the most meaningful hours of my week have nothing to do with houses.

I am active with the Order of Malta, which serves the sick and the poor, including bringing the sick on pilgrimage to Lourdes, France. Closer to home, I serve with the Contra Costa Food Bank, with St Vincent de Paul at the St Mary's pantry, and alongside the Missionaries of Charity sisters, who feed homeless people in Oakland. What stays with me is not any one day of service. It is how ordinary it is: neighbors showing up, again and again, to feed people, sit with people, and treat everyone who comes through the door with respect. I share this not to boast, but out of gratitude — for the people who do this work faithfully, and for what it has taught me about patience and dignity. If you are in the East Bay and have been meaning to get involved, I would encourage you to find one place to serve, and start there. One regular commitment is enough to change how you see your own community.
