Helping a parent downsize, with dignity

Helping a parent leave a home they have lived in for decades is not really a real estate task. It is a family one. A few things I have come to believe help:

Start with belongings, not the house. Sorting a lifetime of things takes time and deserves it. Let your parent decide what matters, and do not rush the memories attached to ordinary objects.

Separate the move from the repairs. A house that needs major work does not always need to be fixed before it is sold. Weighing a repair against selling as-is — after the move, not during it — can spare everyone a renovation no one wanted to manage.

Keep the pace theirs. Clear dates help, but pressure does not. A dignified, unhurried process leaves a family feeling they did this well, together.

I wrote years ago about what retirees look for in senior living, and that interest has stayed with me: the right next home matters, and so does how a family gets there. If your family is facing this, take it one room, and one conversation, at a time.
